Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada eBook Washington Irving

I was vaguely familiar with the name of the American writer Washington Irving, until I read a small plaque on a wall in one of the rooms of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. The plaque said the author had lived in that room and had written "Tales of the Alhambra" during his stay in the Palace Fortress. A few years later I came across the book, and then I realized the need to revisit the place an enjoy it, this time, through the eyes of a very talented writer. Some of those stories, fables, and myths are presented again in more detail in his historic epic
"Chronicles of the Conquest of Granada". The lengthy book is very entertaining, despite the fact that it is a narration of one battle after another, but the narrative is so vivid, and the prose so poetic, that the reader gets immersed in the story, and he pages fly very fast. Of particular interest is the way Isabella of Aragon, the Catholic Queen, is portrayed as the brain behind the extraordinary achievements of Spain during her reign. Another example of Irving's creativity is the way he describes the unique characteristics of each campaign, and the different approaches followed by the two rival armies. Those of us privileged enough to have visited Granada, Malaga, Ronda, and Southern Andalucía, really enjoy the details that abound of castles, topography and villages, described with so much accuracy and love. After reading these two books, I cannot wait to visit again that blessed land of the Moors and the Spaniards. JAS

Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada eBook Washington Irving Reviews

I am a biased reader because Washington Irving has always been my favorite author. This a must for any individual who still remembers the magic of his/her childhood readings. As an adult you will appreciate Irving even more. He elegantly takes us back to a world when writing well meant something and creating magical illusions and poetical description when recounting history was appreciated.
A must-read for anyone taking a vacation in Andalucia who is interested in medieval history. Irving skilfully weaves the historical records of his day into a town by town conquest of the Castilians over the Moors with stories of courage and intrigue, vividly recreating the battles and sieges in places such as Rhonda, Jaen, Malaga and Granada. I wish I had read this before I holidayed there, although 'Tales of the Alhambra' was also a good read.
Washington Irving extensively researched and related these events when they were nearly ten generations fresher than today. This book is a relevant, historical treatment of the ousting of the Moors from Spain and speaks of the pageantry, blood and grit of the times on a background of the emerging kingdom that gave rise to Spanish power.
While planning a trip to Spain I enjoyed reading about the history of Granada. I prefer reading non-fiction historical works especially when I am planning to visit a particular area. This book not only tells the exciting yet brutal story, but makes you feel like you're there; it also makes your trip more meaningful .
I've read histories relating the fall and removal of the Spanish Moors from Iberia before. This is the most entertaining and detailed. It gives much insight into the person and characters of Ferdinand and, especially, Isabella. I have improved insight into the political motivations of the era. A good insight into some aspects of how we became the European society we are.
I found this book very interesting, glad I did not live in this period. I love Spain and after reading this book may go back and visit some of the sights listed in it. History is always interesting.
Written in 1829 by Washington Irving, the genre of this book is called "Romantic History". The story is based in fact, embellished to make it read more like a novel. The result is a more accessible history read. Recommended for those interested in the subject or who have traveled to Spain.
I reccomend you wikipedia Washington Irving before you read it.
